For over 100 years Clare Medical Centre has provided family medical care. The mission of the practice is to provide a comprehensive high quality medical service that is accessible and affordable to the community. The practice provides diverse medical care for patients, minimising the need to travel to Adelaide for services.
Clare is a regional town of approximately 5000 people situated in the heart of the scenic Clare Valley. It is an easy 2 hour drive north of Adelaide. Clare is surrounded by rich agricultural and viticultural country, and is renowned for its prize-winning wines. The practice serves a regional population of approximately 10,000 people.
This 14 doctor practice prides itself on providing a comprehensive medical service to Clare and the surrounding smaller townships in the lower mid north region of South Australia. We provide after-hours and emergency care, anaesthetics, obstetrics, women's health, family and geriatric health, surgery and minor procedures and other special interests.
The practice also has access to, and provides the bulk of the inpatient medical care for the 24 bed Clare Hospital (Lower North Health). This is well supported by a wide variety of specialists who regularly visit Clare to consult and operate.
The practice employs 7 nurses (3.0) FTE to undertake a wide range of roles including providing wound care, immunisations, Enhanced Primary Care Services, care planning, assisting with medicals and other duties that help make the doctors more efficient.
Two of these nurses are mental health trained and have been employed under the Mental Health Nurse Incentive Program (0.8 FTE). This role supports the coordination of services for patients as well as providing counselling intervention.
Most of the visiting specialists consult from the Clare Medical Centre. These include the cardiologists, child psychiatrist, endocrinologist, ENT surgeon, general surgeon, gynaecologists, ophthalmologist, orthopaedic surgeon, plastic surgeon, psychiatrist, sleep disorders, rheumatologist and urologist.
Clare Medical Centre provides the anaesthetic and after-care services for the specialist surgeons of ENT, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Plastics and Urology.
Aged Care Services
The practice provides health care for the residents of the following aged care facilities:
- Kara House: 35 bed aged care facility attached to the Clare Hospital
- Carinya: 50 bed aged care facility run by Helping Hand situated in Clare
- Snowtown Hospital: includes 18 high care beds
- Lumeah Homes: 30 bed aged care facility attached to Snowtown Hospital
Clare Medical Centre provides regional services to the surrounding communities of Burra, Snowtown and Spalding. A doctor also visits Wilcannia to participate in a Chronic Disease clinic once a month. This service is provided in partnership with the Maari Ma Aboriginal Health Services and the RFDS based at Broken Hill.
Education and Training
Clare Medical Centre is committed to medical education and training. Being a multi-skilled training practice, we aim to train and educate ourselves, registrars, interns and students to the highest level of competency in a supportive environment.
The Clare Medical Centre is located in a purpose-built premises located in the heart of the township. The facilities ensure quality care is provided to patients, and provides the doctors and staff with a comfortable and enriching environment to work and socialise.
The doctors are supported by a dedicated and professional team of staff including 4 full time equivalent nursing positions.
The Clare Valley is a beautiful location and work conditions are managed to ensure that the doctors have the opportunity to enjoy the best of the rural lifestyle.
